Latin Name:Cymbopogon winterianus, also known as Maha pengiri

Country of Origin:Java

Cultivation Method:Conventionally Grown

Extraction Method:Steam Distilled

Extracted From:Leaves

Color:Clear to pale yellow

Perfumery Note:Top

Aromatherapy Properties:Citronella's properties are similar to Lemongras, its scent however, is less appealing to many people. Commonly used in deodorizing and insect repelling products, and as a raw material for the perfume industry.

Suggested Use:Both the Java Citronella and the organic Citronella work well in blends designed to keep insects at bay, for example, in combination with Cedarwood, Lavender, Patchouli or Eucalyptus. You can diffuse the blend outdoors or add some to a candle (extinguish the flame; add 2-3 drops to the wax pool; ignite again). You can also add a few drops to mopping water when mopping your home.

Please refer to Aromatherapy literature for medicinal and healing related information.

History:When Citronella was first exhibited in London in 1851 it was introduced as "nard" oil, which is why it has been confused with Spikenard oil ever after. It has its place in cleaning products and insect repellents and the Java Citronella is an inexpensive oil frequently fractionated into perfume components (Citronellal, Geraniol)

Citronella is frequently used to substitute much more expensive Essential Oils, such as Lemon Verbena or Melissa officinalis, even though both aroma and properties do not compare.

Specific Safety Information:No known toxicity, do patch test if adding to body care products. Avoid in pregnancy.
